Tips for Inexperienced Painters

New homeowners often learn their first DIY skills by painting walls and ceilings. Basic painting – not specialized techniques that call for well-developed skills and tools - is a DIY project that can be learned as you go along. Consider hiring someone who has more experience to coach you at the outset; check with your agent or insurer how Pennsylvania home insurance might be affected if you engage hired help.

We’ve made a list of some basic tips that might help a novice painter.
-Using a roller to apply paint is faster than brushing, but can be messy. Consider using a roller for the middle areas and a brush around the edges and in corners.
-Paint the ceiling before the walls. To paint a ceiling, start in a corner and paint the edge as you go. Extend the first coat about an inch onto the wall, so that you have a clean line when you apply wall paint over it later.
-Start painting a wall from the corner, and use a brush around sockets and switches, near door frames and skirting.
-Don’t use masking tape; instead, use a special “cutting in” brush in places such as the join between wall and ceiling where you need to paint in a straight line.
Often an inexperienced person can transform the appearance of a room with a few coats of paint. Some experienced outside help could be useful while you build up your confidence as a painter. Remember too, that if you’re undertaking extensive home improvements rather than just adding a fresh coat of paint, you may need to revise the level of coverage on your Pennsylvania home insurance.
