According to The Inquirer, Fawziyya Fox has spent most of her life trying to protect her brother, Buckner, from the bad luck he has faced and misguided choices. Her mission began 23 years ago when she watched an FBI agent take "Buck" from their mother's arms. With all these siblings have gone through, they still have hope for themselves and are making the effort to help others as well.
Fawziyya was 5 when their parents were featured on America's Most Wanted. The couple had beaten their half-sister, Aaliyah, to death and buried her in a trunk under the Platt Memorial Bridge. The family was hiding in Virginia when, on March 25, 1988, FBI agents kicked in the door. With their parents in prison, Fawziyya, Buck, and two sisters went to live in Wynnefield with their maternal grandmother.
"I knew I could do better than people like my dad," says Fawziyya. "The good thing about all the trauma is that it made me want to work hard." Last year, Fawziyya came across an old social work case file with test results showing Buck's intelligence "above average." "I always knew he was brighter than his teachers thought he was," she said.
Putting their skills to work, the two started a nonprofit named Foxes Help Organization, in which Buck was appointed CEO. His proposal contained ambitious goals. "Families who have an incarcerated parent and/or have been traumatized by gun violence tend to frequently repeat that cycle. ... PTSD has become a large problem in the inner city. . . . Foxes seeks to break that cycle." Buck says he's just trying to be his own master and help strangers whose predicaments he understands. If the nonprofit succeeds, it may save him too.
